It's My Bloggy and I'll Crow If I Want To, Part II

Reader Chet's recent comment on my post about "Donner Party Cannibalism: Did They or Didn't They?" reminded me of some news I meant to share: Several weeks ago I learned that the article is a finalist (runner up) for the Western Writers of American Spur Award for best short nonfiction for 2014. What a surprise! I had no clue that it had even been nominated. Naturally, this is exciting news, but despite my elation, the article is still unsatisfactory and I'm drafting a more detailed study. It may turn into a book by the time I'm through... Will keep you posted.

That award is well deserved, Kristin, but it is a pittance compared to the full recognition and respect you are due for all you have given to lovers of history and the American West.

Not to put any pressure on you, my friend, but another book from you would be fantastic.

That's outstanding news but certainly not a surprise. I thought your article was wonderfully concise and extremely well-written. - B

I'm late to the party, for by now you've won, but just to get my kudos in ... Well done Ms. Johnson. I'm researching the Donner tragedy for my own book, and I hold you to be my compass needle's North, when it comes to sorting between fact and fiction, and vetting all the previous research. The Writers of American Spur Award article is the clearest, most up-to-date, and accurate assessment of this complicated story that I've found yet. You pack a big wallop into just a few pages. Thanks for your labors and professional approach! Allan Wolf
